MEMORANDUM FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ADMINISTRATOR TO: WSU Students FROM: Professor LR van Staden DATE: 27 August, 2013 URGENT NOTICE TO ALL STUDENTS The labour impasse at WSU remains unresolved. The response to the offer made by management to staff last week has not been sufficiently conclusive to enable classes to resume. Our students have been extremely patient over the past five weeks of the labour strike and we commend them for that. However, it has become clear that the labour deadlock is taking much longer to resolve than anticipated. The university does not want to keep students waiting on campus indefinitely. The volatile situation that is unfolding has made it impossible for management to risk or to guarantee the safety and well-being of our students and the communities in which they live. We therefore regret to announce that all students are to vacate university premises, university residences and university rented accommodation with immediate effect. Students must be off all university premises at the four campuses by 12 noon on Wednesday 28 August, 2013. Management continues to explore alternative solutions to the ongoing labour strike. The decision to send students home does not mean that the academic year is lost. All efforts will be made to put alternative arrangements in place in order to complete this second semester. Students will be recalled by official communique as soon as it is possible to do so.
