MEMORANDUM TO THE MARIST COLLEGE COMMUNITY FROM: DENNIS J. MURRAY As you know, a Metro North train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central Terminal derailed Sunday morning near Spuyten Duyvil, killing four passengers and injuring scores of others. It is with sadness that I must report that a member of the Marist family was among the deceased. Donna Smith of Newburgh was a 2001 graduate of Marists Paralegal Program. Donna was beloved by the members of her cohort, as well as by our faculty and staff members in Fishkill. She is remembered as someone who motivated others with her enthusiasm for learning and positive attitude. In the best tradition of the Marist Brothers, she volunteered for organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Habitat for Humanity, served as an assistant chaplain for her local fire department, participated in charity races, and mentored local girls in Newburgh. We will ask our college chaplain Father Richard LaMorte to hold a memorial Mass for Donna in the Marist Chapel. I would ask that you keep Donna, her family, and the other victims of this terrible tragedy in your thoughts and prayers.
