Yellow Fever The Commonwealth of The Bahamas has published on its website at bahamas/entry-requirements the guidelines for travellers to The Bahamas from countries where Yellow Fever is endemic. The recommendations are in congruence with those of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) advice for travellers from countries endemic for Yellow Fever. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers over one (1) year of age arriving from countries with risk of Yellow Fever transmission (excluding Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago) and travellers having transited more than twelve (12) hours through the airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. The vaccine must be administered at least ten (10) days prior to arrival in the Bahamas. Ebola The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is following closely the situation regarding the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa. In order to protect the population’s health the country has instituted an enhanced surveillance system to track travellers who may be arriving from the affected countries. It is recommended that travellers from the affected countries do not travel to The Bahamas within twenty-one (21) days of leaving those countries. Measles Measles occurs throughout the world and remains a serious and common disease in developing countries. It is one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths in children worldwide. Measles is relatively rare in The Bahamas thanks to high immunization rates across the country. The Ministry of Health of The Bahamas is not advising any travel restrictions related to Measles at this time. It does recommend, however, that all travellers to The Bahamas have at least two (2) doses of the vaccine prior to travelling to The Bahamas. Chikungunya Chikungunya (CHICKV) is a mosquito-borne viral infection. CHIKV has now reached epidemic levels in many countries throughout the Caribbean. The Bahamas does not have a high burden of Chikungunya at this time. However, as it is recognized that persons from areas that do have a high burden of this disease travel to the country, protective measures for the travellers and the population must be implemented. There is no vaccine or treatment available for CHIKV, so preventive measures are essential. All visitors are advised to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites as indicated below: · Use insect repellents on exposed skin. Insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin (also known as icaridin), oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or IR3535 are the most effective when used according to the label. If also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and insect repellent second. · Where possible, wear light coloured long-sleeved shirts and long pants, socks and shoes to minimize exposed skin. · When indoors use air conditioning and keep the doors and windows closed, unless they are screened, to keep out mosquitoes. If this is not possible sleeping under mosquito nets help to prevent being bitten. ·
