MEMORIAL DAY: People dont know the difference between individuals and institutions. Patriotic holidays usually highlight this problem and always causes intense disagreements. I have a deep respect for Black people who serve in the military. As a person who has a lot of family members in law enforcement and the military, I see the value of being trained to protect your family, community and country. Thats only half the story though. The problem is that even though weve fought and died in every major American war, sacrificed ourselves in the name of American freedom and are fiercely loyal to the protection of this nation...Black people are still treated as second class citizens. Not only that...our very own people are victims of the military might of this nation. White supremacy is only interested in protecting itself...not Black people (or other people of color). We shouldnt be so quick in our blind patriotism to the United States. We should be more politically astute in making gross generalizations and characterizations about the freedom and liberty of America. This still the same nation that enslaved your ancestors and conspires to kill your people on the daily basis.Thats why youll never catch me pledging allegiance or saluting a flag. I salute the individual Black people who have served and died in the military. You deserve our respect and reverence. Shame on the US Federal Governments agenda of global white supremacist imperialism and oppression.
