His peanut roaster machine a familiar sight on Mena Street for years. 7 February.....New courthouse proposed, to be built as part of the works project. 1 March.....Mena became center of news interest because of the states legislative investigation of Commonwealth College. 8 March.....Dynamite discovered under cabin in Janssen Park. 4 April.....Mena Library, established in 1898, one of the four oldest libraries in the state, according to the Arkansas Gazette. 18 April.....Week of April 23-27 set aside for city beautification and improvement. PIcture of President Roosevelt framed with Ouachita crystals sent to the White House by Hal Jones. 23 May....Photos of 43 MHS graduates of 1935 appeared in Star. 13 June.....Star reporter discovered there is no other Mena in the entire nation. 1 July.....Arkansas first 2 % sales tax went into effect, with local group joining organization to fight the new law. 9 August....New Legion Hut on Hamilton Street dedicated by local post. 16 September.....County Judge James Looney died in Fort Smith hospital. 7 November.....W.L. Parker won special election to fill office left by death of county judge Looney. 5 December.....Twenty-third annual Possum Club feast drew largest crowd ever. Four hundred gathered to elect 82 year old English Baker as the new president of the club.
