MERCIFUL GOD- 15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. Psalm 86:15 Yes, says, the honest doubter, I, too, would like to believe in a merciful God. But war, suffering, sorrow, and distress, what do you do about them, you who believe ? Do you close to these things ? No, but I believe in a merciful God, I cannot refrain from that. When He received me, miserable wretch that I was, and blotted out all my sins, taking my weary, frightened soul to His own heart, I met merciful God. I know that He is merciful, even though I come upon many things in this world which I do not understand. But, then, God has never demanded of me that I should understand Him and all that He does. All He expects is that I should believe in Him. However, some things I do seem to understand. I remember from the time that I was a little child that when my father disciplined me I thought at times that he was unmerciful father. But now I thank him because he had the wisdom and courage to do so. Our heavenly Father, too, is so merciful that He chastens us. And even though the chastening, while it last, seems hard, nevertheless, afterwards, we see His mercy. Oh how merciful ! He give sorrow in the world, but joy in the Lord. He permits us to be ill in body, but well in soul. He makes us poor in the things of this earth, but rich in peace and hope. Suffering child of God ! It is not dangerous to suffer. In this world we are to suffer. Christ went before us also in this respect. We are to follow Him also in suffering. You are making good use of your time when you suffer. You are suffering unjustly, you say ? Oh, well, neither is that dangerous. That is that way Jesus suffered all His life. Prayer O Thou merciful God, teach us to know Thy mercy, for our thoughts are not Your thoughts, neither Your ways are not our ways. but to trust You with all our heart, and lean not in our own understanding; in all our ways acknowledge You to direct our paths. In Jesus Name, Amen.
