MERCURY PROTOCOL FOR LARGE SPILL LARGE SPILLS OF MERCURY ARE AMOUNTS GREATER THAN 5 MILLILITERS (1 TEASPOON) Emergency response personnel who are coordinating the response to a large mercury spill should follow these guidelines to prevent unnecessary exposure to those involved in the incident. This protocol is divided into two areas: people and buildings. While both of these areas are important and the guidelines are designed to protect the public health during mercury spills, priority urges that PEOPLE come first. If these guidelines are followed, the impact of large mercury spills will be substantially reduced. The goal of this protocol is to provide clearance of both the people and building involved so the people can leave the area. PEOPLE ISSUES Anyone involved with HEATED mercury must be evaluated by a physician. Identify those who came into DIRECT contact with the mercury, either on the skin or the clothes. Those who did not have direct contact with mercury can be considered to be NOT CONTAMINATED. If no mercury vapor analyzer is available, check the clothes of those who came into direct contact. IF VAPOR READINGS EXCEED 5 ug/mg3 - CONFISCATE CLOTHES, EXCEPT SHOES of those who had direct contact. Identify those involved in the incident who had significant BREATHING ZONE EXPOSURE. People exposed for more than 8 hours should be referred to a physician for a mercury screening. For those who had skin exposure only, such as on the hands, etc., have the person wash the area at least 3 times with strong soap. Once this is done that person should be considered decontaminated. BUILDING ISSUES Determine the breathing zone of the normal room occupants. Locate and decontaminate the spill site. Re-evaluate the breathing zone after decontamination until clearance level below 4 (ug/m3) is obtained. Dispose of mercury containing materials in accordance with the appropriate regulations. __________________ FROM THE SHIP ABOVE TO THE SHORES BELOW
