MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! December 24, 2014 Hope Clinic exists to share the love of Jesus Christ by partnering with our community to provide primary healthcare and resources for healthy living to the underserved population Outstanding News for Hope Clinic! OUTSTANDING NEWS FOR HOPE CLINIC! We have received the highest level of Patient-Centered Home Recognition (Level 3) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, Washington, DC. We are the first practice with Health Texas Provider Network to meet the 2011 revised standards. Our staff is dedicated to the mission of Hope Clinic and providing quality services to everyone who enters our doors. (See the official notice for publication below this article.) This recognition was earned after diligent pursuit of excellence for several years. The medical home model holds promise as a way to improve health care in America by transforming how primary care is organized and delivered, defining a medical home not simply as a place but as a model of the organization of primary care that delivers the core functions of primary health care. Jenny Williams, RN, BSN, Executive Director, has led the team to meet the highest of standards of patient care required to obtain this certification. The medical home encompasses five functions and attributes: 1) Comprehensive Care, 2) Patient Centered Care - - relation-based with an orientation toward the whole person, 3) Coordinated Care, 4) Accessible Services, and 5) Quality and Safety. Congratulations to Jenny for her leadership and tenacity in acquiring this recognition for the clinic. Hope Clinic is the only free/charitable clinic in Texas that has attained the Level 3 at this time. Some of the comments received via email in response to this news include: Jenny, this is a remarkable achievement....and to do so reflects incredible professionalism and dedication of you and the staff. Carl E. Couch, MD, MMM President, Baylor Quality Alliance, Baylor Health Care System. Dr. Couch also serves on the Hope Clinic Board of Directors. Congratulations to you and your entire team on your commitment to a healing environment that is focused on creating a culture around the highest level of patient centered medical care. Gary Brock, Baylor Scott & White President and CEO. Mr. Brock serves on the Hope Clinic Advisory Council. Jenny, thank you for your leadership, commitment, and the example you set in providing excellence in patient-centered care for our community. May God continue to bless you and Hope Clinic in the exciting years ahead! Pat Walker, Hope Clinic Advisory Board. Hope Clinics Staff Physicians, Scott Wang, M.D. and Jennifer Kampas, M.D., are linked to this recognition. The entire staff at Hope Clinic is to be congratulated in continuing to raise the standard of service on an ongoing basis. Thanks, TEAM - it takes each of you contributing excellence in your area. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hope Clinic is very pleased to have this recognition. In hindsight I think we can see Gods hand leading all the way in blessing our efforts to minister to the needy. Consider that in 2002 the clinic began as a part of the First Baptist Church mission ministry, meeting once and then twice weekly in a few rooms of the Salvation Army. Dr. Martha Sanford led this endeavor and planted the seeds serving as Executive Director until mid 2006 when the space at the Salvation Army was no longer available for our use. With no facility in which to practice medicine, the Board decided to seek another site and wait for the leadership of the Lord - to remain organized as an inactive clinic at least until the end of 2006 as we explored options. Barbara Burton, who had joined the staff in January as Executive Director, and the small group of board members prayed for clarity and vision to continue, not wanting this ministry to cease. By January 2007, with the ongoing voluntary help of Dr. Jenny Kampas, Hope Clinic was again open for business in a refurbished small building owned by First Methodist Church. The outpouring of so many individuals and groups to help reopen the clinic confirmed this was Gods work and that we were to provide. In those next three years, the branding of the clinic, the mission, the needs, the opportunities and the challenges were presented to multiple churches, clubs, businesses, individuals and anyone who would listen - telling the story of who Hope Clinic is and what is our mission. Volunteers were many - volunteer doctors saw patients - and soon we were seeing patients 20 hours per week. Baylor Garland and Project Access Dallas saw the opportunity of working together with Hope Clinic and began a relationship that benefited all. After months of negotiations, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Baylor Garland and Hope Clinic in 2009, forming a partnership of care - each doing what they do best. This was the key that opened the door to Hope becoming the well-oiled clinic that we have today. Money became available: the first physician was hired giving us 20 hours coverage per week in addition to the volunteer physicians. We were also able to hire a full time Medical Assistant to standardize patient care as our client base grew. That year - 2009 - our patient load grew to the point that in order to meet the demands, we refurbished another old empty building behind the clinic, adding much needed space for offices and diabetic education. The demands of the clinic emphasized the need for bringing an experienced RN on staff that had knowledge of a charitable clinic practice and one who would have a heart for Christ-centered medical care. Hope Clinic has held high the standard of maintaining and following our Mission Statement. Another clear sign of Gods leading: Jenny Williams had recently joined the Life Group that I teach at Lake Pointe Church. As we became better acquainted, I realized not only was she an RN with a BSN who had actively been involved in founding and running such a clinic, she was a member of the National Association for Free and Charitable Clinics, and also had a heart for serving the Lord through medical ministries. We began to discuss the possibilities. After working part time at the clinic that fall, Jenny accepted the position of Executive Director, effective January 1, 2010. At that time (2010), the Board asked me to stay on part-time in the role of Development Director rather than to retire as I had planned. The work load was more than enough for both of us and we have continued to serve together. Jenny began to pull together all the pieces of the partnership with Baylor and then to build on that as our funding there and throughout the community continued to grow. Client visits continued to increase as we offered more open clinic times. The work of volunteer physicians, specialists and the primary care doctors became a cohesive strand of care. The job description of an ED at a medical clinic is so diverse and multi-faceted as to defy quick commentary. ******************************* NOW, for the point in this narrative that ties the history together with this award: Raising money for a non-profits budget is made easier when the agency is well managed and the funds are properly accounted. Requests for grants and donations require transparency of financials . Cathy Clopton, CPA, who has volunteered her services and financial advice pro bono for years has helped us maintain audit-ready financials with the oversight of a stellar Board of Directors, led by Ed Seghers. Add to this a clinic continually striving to provide excellent care. The other factor that must be considered in fund raising: Is the agency true to its mission? The spiritual element of Hope Clinic has stayed true to its course of serving the needy and sharing the love of Jesus Christ. The Spiritual Counseling team has led us in this area and continues in its goal of praying and sharing Christ with the hurting. Those factors in place, the Development Director has an excellent and much needed community asset to sell, that is a clinic that is: * financially sustainable * led by a stellar Board of Directors * true to its Christian mission * receiving recognition for excellence * working within budgeted guidelines to achieve its goals. This a great non-profit to support with your charitable gifts - a local agency that you can observe and whose leaders are folks you may already know. Gods hand in this is so evident to me - the Capital Campaign is making its Hallelujah Goal! Hope Clinic moved Friday - debt free - into a beautiful new facility that affords the needed space for expansion of services. Would you continue, or perhaps begin, to fund the ongoing operational expenses of this mission point? Come let us partner together. God uses ordinary people to accomplish His work The culmination of our meager efforts and Gods infinite grace brings us to this point of success in which we can rejoice. May the Love of Christ Jesus abound in our hearts as we serve those who need our care today and in the days to come. Staying on Mission - and MERRY CHRISTMAS -----Barbara Burton
