MERRY CHRISTMAS by S. Pitcher At home it’s winter now A chill lies in the air. The morning mist is muffling the sound Of workmen putting up the Christmas Fayre The grass is green still, The leaves turn red and fall. Nature is getting ready for the cold While you wait for your turn to make a call. You dare to close your eyes And memories take hold Of hills and walks and of your favourite dog. It took just weeks to change from youth to feeling old. You’re mastering a smile While getting ready for the fight. ‘A happy festive season to you all! May your New Year be prosperous and bright.’ And now it’s time to go. You leave behind the thoughts of home. You know you’re ready for what comes. There is no Merry Christmas in the combat zone.
