MERS-Coronavirus Kills Malaysian Man, Infects Filipino Nurse A deadly virus known as MERS-CoV has killed a man in Malaysia, while the Philippine health department has placed a migrant Filipino worker returning from the United Arab Emirates in quarantine after he tested positive for the respiratory illness. Malaysia’s Health Minister S. Subramaniam said the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-CoV), had killed a 54-year old man who had returned to Malaysia on March 29 after a pilgrimage to Mecca. This is the first recorded case of the virus in Malaysia. The victim developed a fever, cough and breathing problems and was hospitalized on April 10. He died three days later after succumbing to severe pneumonia caused by the MERS-CoV infection, Mr. Subramaniam said. Health officials say there is no known cure and they have little information about origins of the virus and how it is transmitted. Mr. Subramaniam said the ministry is conducting prevention activities and control, including monitoring those in close contact with the victim. Passengers of two Turkish Airlines flights on the Jeddah-Istanbul-Kuala Lumpur route on March 29 were told to report to authorities. The Philippines also saw its first recorded case of the virus, according to the health department. Health Secretary Enrique Ona told reporters at a briefing Wednesday that the Filipino male diagnosed with the virus was a nurse who had come into contact with a Filipino paramedic who died in the UAE last week due to infection from the deadly strain of the coronavirus. Mr. Ona said the nurse and his relatives were placed in isolation after the nurse’s test in the UAE returned positive for the virus. The nurse and four members of his family are now in a hospital, said Mr. Ona. He did not release the name of the hospital, nor did he provide the name of the nurse and his relatives. Mr. Ona said none of those who have been hospitalized have shown any symptoms of the MERS-CoV, which include fever, cough, shortness of breath and diarrhea. “He has the virus, but he is not sick,” Mr. Ona in reference to the nurse. “He can still infect others.” Around a dozen people who sat around the migrant worker during the flight back to the Philippines have been informed and will be monitored for the next two weeks, a period when symptoms of the deadly virus usually show, said Mr. Ona. According to the World Health Organization, as of April 16, there are 238 confirmed cases of MERS-CoV in 10 countries, which have resulted in 92 deaths. ที่มา blogs.wsj/searealtime/2014/04/17/mers-coronavirus-kills-malaysian-man-infects-filipino-nurse/ โรคโคโรน่าไวรัสสายพันธุ์ใหม่ หรือ เมิร์สคอฟ แพร่ระบาดแล้ว 11 ประเทศ ตายแล้ว 92 ราย ด้าน สธ. เผย ยังไม่พบผู้ติดเชื้อในประเทศไทย แต่สั่งเฝ้าระวัง โดยเฉพาะคนที่เดินทางกลับมาจากตะวันออกกลางที่มีอาการคล้ายไข้หวัดใหญ่ จากกรณีที่พบการแพร่ระบาดของเชื้อไวรัสโคโรน่าสายพันธุ์ ใหม่ 2012 หรือ เมิร์สคอฟ (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus : MERS-CoV) ในเขตภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ของประเทศซาอุดีอาระเบีย และขณะนี้เริ่มพบผู้ป่วยในเมืองเจดดาห์ ทางภาคตะวันตกของประเทศบ้างแล้ว ทำให้สถานกงสุลใหญ่ ณ เมืองเจดดาห์ ออกประกาศเตือนคนไทยที่อาศัยอยู่ในเมืองเจดดาห์ ให้เฝ้าระวังการแพร่ระบาดดังกล่าวนั้น ในส่วนของประเทศไทยเอง กระทรวงสาธารณสุขก็ได้ประชุมติดตามสถานการณ์ของโรคดังกล่าวอย่างใกล้ชิดเช่น กัน โดยเมื่อวันที่ 17 เมษายน 2557 นพ.ณรงค์ สหเมธาพัฒน์ ปลัดกระทรวงสาธารณสุข เปิดเผยว่า ได้มอบหมายให้กรมควบคุมโรคตั้งศูนย์ปฏิบัติการตอบโต้ภาวะฉุกเฉินด้านการ แพทย์และสาธารณสุข เพื่อติดตามสถานการณ์แล้ว ซึ่งขณะนี้ยังไม่พบผู้ป่วยติดเชื้อโคโรน่าไวรัสในประเทศไทย แต่ก็ไม่ประมาท เพราะเชื้อมีโอกาสเข้ามายังประเทศไทยได้ ทั้งนี้ นพ.ณรงค์ ระบุด้วยว่า จากข้อมูลขององค์การอนามัยโลก จนถึงวันที่ 16 เมษายน 2557 ขณะ นี้พบผู้ป่วยติดเชื้อไวรัสโคโรน่าแล้ว 238 ราย เสียชีวิต 92 ราย จากการติดเชื้อใน 11 ประเทศ คือ จอร์แดน ซาอุดีอาระเบีย กาตาร์ อังกฤษ สหรัฐอาหรับเอมิเรตส์ ฝรั่งเศส ตูนีเซีย เยอรมนี อิตาลี โอมาน และคูเวต โดยพบมากที่สุดในซาอุดีอาระเบีย อย่างไรก็ตาม กระทรวงสาธารณสุขยังไม่ได้ห้ามคนไทยเดินทางไปประเทศดังกล่าว แต่ได้สั่งการให้หน่วยงานด้านสาธารณสุขเฝ้าระวังผู้ป่วยที่เดินทางกลับมาจาก ประเทศที่พบผู้ป่วย แล้วมีอาการป่วยคล้ายไข้หวัดใหญ่ รวมทั้งนักท่องเที่ยวที่เดินทางมาจากประเทศดังกล่าวด้วย หากมีอาการต้องสงสัย เพื่อป้องกันและควบคุมการแพร่กระจายของเชื้อ ด้าน นพ.โสภณ เมฆธน อธิบดีกรมควบคุมโรค ให้ข้อมูลว่าโรค โคโรน่าไวรัส เป็นโรคติดเชื้อทางเดินหายใจเฉียบพลันที่มีอาการรุนแรงคล้ายโรคซาร์ส ซึ่งติดต่อได้ง่ายผ่านการไอจาม แล้วเชื้อจะลุกลามเข้าปอดอย่างรวดเร็ว ผู้ ป่วยจะมีอาการไข้สูง ไอ บางคนจะมีอาการหายใจหอบ ถ่ายเหลว อาเจียนร่วมด้วย และร้อยละ 96 ของผู้ป่วยนั้น มีโรคประจำตัวหนึ่งโรคหรือมากกว่า ได้แก่ เบาหวาน ความดันโลหิตสูง โรคหัวใจ โรคไต ขณะที่ นพ.วชิระ เพ็งจันทร์ รองปลัดกระทรวงสาธารณสุข ได้ให้ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมอีกว่า โรค โคโรน่าไวรัสนี้ มีแหล่งแพร่มาจากสัตว์เลี้ยง เช่น อูฐ พบผู้ป่วยอยู่ในแถบประเทศตะวันออกกลาง และมีแนวโน้มพบผู้ป่วยเพิ่มขึ้น ในส่วนของประเทศไทยนั้น แม้จะยังไม่พบผู้ติดเชื้อ แต่เชื้อมีโอกาสแพร่มาไทยได้ตลอดเวลาจากการเดินทาง โดยเฉพาะการไปแสวงบุญที่ตะวันออกกลาง จึงจำเป็นต้องกระตุ้นเตือนเจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุขทั้งโรงพยาบาลรัฐและเอกชนให้ ตระหนักและติดตามเฝ้าระวัง เพราะโรคนี้หากรู้เร็วก็จะสามารถควบคุมป้องกันแพร่ระบาดได้เร็ว
