MESSAGE DELIVERED!! Prominent businessman, Chris Kirubi, has condemned the wastefulness of the proposed Bungoma budget saying that it is a sign of misplaced priorities. In a statement posted on Facebook, Kirubi urged the National Government to intervene to prevent the devolved monies from being wasted; “I request the National Government to intervene on behalf of Kenyans for this scandalous waste of money that would have gone to building roads, boosting the education sector, payment of teachers, security and other needs that will help the greater majority of Kenyans,” reads the statement. Kirubi added that the Bungoma budget could be a bad sign that devolution is primed to fail due to bad leadership; “If the Bungoma budget mirrors what other Counties are doing with Public funds, then the whole devolution is faced with disaster. These are the worst people I have ever come across representing a people. May God save the people of Bungoma from such misplaced priorities and save devolution in Kenya.” Kenyans on social media have been united in their condemnation of the wastefulness in the Bungoma budget especially the allocation of Sh 53 million for entertainment. However the officer in charge of preparing the Bungoma budget, Paul Masinde, has come to defend the budget saying the allocation of Sh 53r million for entertainment was an error that had already been corrected; “As Finance and Budget teams, we request for your understanding, it was an accidental misplacement that has already been corrected,” he said. “As the Minister of Finance who oversees the budget committee, we acknowledge that this was an error on our side. The Sh50, 000,000 was accidentally clustered with the Governor’s entertainment budget of Sh3,500,000 putting the total figure to Sh53,000,000,” he explained. Bungoma has been allocated Sh 5.9 billion by the Government.
