MESSAGE TO THE UC RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY SAFETY TIP PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ID THEFT With the upcoming holiday season, please take a moment to consider some short and long term prevention steps to protecting your identity: • When paying your credit card bill, do not write your entire credit card number on you check. Only write the last four digits. • When having your personal checks printed, do not write out your complete name. You can use initials and or a shortened name. • Never have your driver’s license number or Social Security number printed on your personal checks. • Make photo copies of your credit cards, identification cards and important documents that you keep in your wallet or purse. • Report any lost or stolen debit and credit cards immediately to your financial institution. • Shred important documents and credit advertisements with your personal information on it. • Set up a system to change your computer passwords regularly. • If you have checks stolen, do not just stop payment on those checks. Close the account and reopen a new one. • Report your lost or stolen Social Security card to the Social Security fraud hot line at 1-800-269-0271 • If you are sure you are the victim of fraud by identity theft, (1) contact your local police department to make a crime report and (2) contact the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
