METAvivor posted an article yesterday about recent research that changes the way we look at the role of our immune system in our bodies fight against cancer, and could lead to significant advances in the treatment of metastatic cancer. To be honest, as someone whose right brain tends to function better than the left (although, not to long ago, I read that the concept of being right-brained or left/brained Is a myth) , I struggled a a bit with this article. It is rich in scientific detail, and although the author made an effort to explain it in laymans terms, it was still a skosh over my head. I was able to glean the following from it: 1. Cancer is super smart and a master manipulator. 2. New research shows that metastasis (particularly lung metastasis, and possibly metastasis to other organs ) can manipulate our immune system into helping then grow, thrive and spread. 3. The discovery that the immune system is not fighting cancer, but instead helping it thrive, is, according to the articles author enormously significant and could lead to new ways to treat metastatic cancer, and improve upon treatments already in use. There is also the possibility that the findings could be used to create new methods for detecting cancer. For a more thorough look at the science behind this new discovery and its possible implications for advancements in metastatic treatment, read The Immune System Can Promote Metastasis by Dr. Agnieszka Swierczak, PH.D. on METAvivors research blog, which I have provided the link to below. ********One More Thing******** If you found this post informative, enlightening, or maybe amusing (who says skosh anyway?!), please share it and/or encourage your friends to join our page. You can also send them an invite by adding them to group. The more members we have the more opportunities we have to spread the word about MBC. We are 70ish or so members away from hitting 1000 members which is pretty incredible since this page has been up for less than three months. Please, help us on our mission to promote metastatic breast cancer advocacy, education and research. Pick 5-10 friends off of your friends list and send them an invite through the add to group feature which can be found by clicking at the top of this page, on the METAvivor logo. That will take you to a screen where there will be an option to invite a friend to join under add to group. It would mean a lot to me. Thanks yall. Xoxo
