MEXICO The New Testament in Tsotsil Language in the Pipeline San Cristobal de Las Casas (Agenzia Fides) - The Commission for the Biblical Pastoral Care of the Episcopal Conference of Mexico (CEM), led by Mgr. Florencio Armando Colin, went to the diocese of San Cristobal de Las Casas for three days, to review the translation of the New Testament in Tsotsil language spoken in the Huixtán area. The Missionary priests of the Sacred Heart and of Our Lady of Guadalupe, along with some local priests and catechists of the parishes have been working on the translation for 35 years. There was a lot of participation on behalf of the community, the young and old, who contributed to the translation. The Commissions review was made by analyzing the main biblical texts, in particular Christological, sacramental and ecclesiological texts. The text now awaits the approval of CEM that will review it during its meeting next April. Tzotzil is a language that comes from the Maya and is spoken especially in the highlands of Chiapas, by the people of ethnic Tzotzil. According to the latest census (2005), the number of people who speak it is about 350,000. It is the fifth language, among the indigenous ones. (CE)
