MEXICO iAN and I just had our 2nd day in Mexico and went with our friends a little way out of town to where they have a country house in to cool mountains..very beautiful. Met their neighbour Fritz? (an American dancer?) We ate at a divine paradise of a hotel with wide verandahs overlooking cool green gardens and peacocks walking around.. You would have NO idea it is hidden behind great doors in the usual grungey street.. This City we just had our 2nd day in Mexico and went with our friends a little way out of town to where they have a country house in to cool mountains..very beautiful. Met their neighbour Fritz? This City is totally full of surprises. around every corner a new park or church or monastery and most shops do business on the pavement which i love. Hundreds of places to eat, music everywhere in the streets and all of them good musicians and singers. the streets are lined with many big trees and the buildings are so varied! So no street looks very orderly or neat but behind a huge gate you find many oases of green cool beauty and history.. We love it.... Day 3…………………………….It just extraordinary how there is a treasure around every corner--either a palace built by Cortez or a public park with soft cool green trees music and people dancing and selling etc.. We went into the City Centre proper today (Sunday). The circular road running around the massive Cathedral was closed for cyclists to ride around on! This happens once a month..Weather perfect again today. We went in by taxi and came home to Coyoacan on the subway. About 6 vendors passed thru the carriage-one selling CD s of Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, U2 and bands of that era which he would give a 10 second 110 decibel demo of, people selling cigarette lighters, pens and textas, sweets, roses and gardenias in small bouquets for 50c (we bought 2 of those) and other non-essentials. Suzie showed us the main post office which is so ornate and has separate enclosures for the tellers made of decorative brass, beautiful ceilings and hanging lamps..The Opera House is lovely too. It is the 79th anniversary of its inception and concerts were going on in the foyer, heaps of people milling about enjoying it or eating in the foyer cafés. It has a deep reddish-purple marble everywhere, many wide flights of steps, and geometrical shapes in the wide entrances which catch the light beautifully. We bought tickets . We r going to see the Flying Dutchman at the Opera on Thursday and got fantastic seats for $40 each !! Then on to a small palace totally covered in blue and white tiles, which is converted into many restaurant areas inside. Beautiful etched glass in the enormous salons. What must it have been like to LIVE in it?? The central courtyard was open to the sky but is now an atrium. Around its 4 sides are wide verandas with beautifully decorated walls and columns and there is one fountain against a wall and there would have been another central fountain.. You can just imagine a Spanish Juliet living there and Romeo climbing the walls and ivy to get to her. We all slept when we got home and Suzie made us a very simple meal (our tummies have been challenged by the food or water or something?). Ian is now sleeping and I’m doing this. Tomorrow Ian and I will walk around here by ourselves. The Frida Kahlo house / museum is 3 blocks from here but shut on Mondays but markets etc allopen and the many truly wonderful ancient churches. In a nod toward modern times, I have admired my hostess’ shoes which she bought in Newcastle??? I have ordered 2 pairs for myself tonight and another pair for Suzie and Tori is going to buy them for us in Newcastle. Amazing what you can do with iphone cameas texts and emails these day-and so essential when you see THE perfect shoes for you this summer…ha ha ha ah SuchFun. Farewell for now
