MHINGA DYNASY PART 2 (1821-1915) After the death of Hosi Shilungwa Mhinga I, the Royal Family, realizing that the eldest son of Hosi Shilungwa Mhinga I, Chavani had predeceased him, and that Sundhuza had been banished, they installed Nghatsani as Hosi of the Mhinga Tribe. Nghatsani ruled for about five (5) years, but was very cruel to his people, who then started rebelling and complaining about him, telling him that he was not even the rightful person to rule them. The Royal Family then decided to go and look for Sundhuza, who was in fact the rightful person, but for the banishment. Arrangements were made for Sundhuza to be installed as Hosi and the leader of the tribe. This did not go down well with Nghatsani. He secretly planned to kill Sundhuza at night, but Sundhuza’s security foiled the attempt and Nghatsani was apprehended, tied to a big rock and thrown in the pool of water (Xidziva) and drowned. Hosi Sundhuza Mhinga I remained to rule his people peacefully until he died in 1915.During his reign, Sundhuza I encountered a number of problems regarding the Mhinga Community land. It was during his reign that the land was taken away through the Native Location Commission of 1903 – 1906/7, commonly known as the Lagden Commission. This land was turned into the Shingwedzi Game Reserve. Through this Commission, only 4 000 morgen was allocated to the Mhinga Community/Tribe, and a farm Mhinga’s Location 258 MT was registered in favour of the tribe in 1912. Numerous presentations were made to the government, but to no avail. Hosi Sundhuza Mhinga I became very unpopular with the government of the day, including Major Stenvenson Hamilton, the first warden of the Kruger National Park. Stevenson Hamilton was responsible for the removal of blacks from their ancestral land, including the land that historically belonged to the Mhinga community as described above. A second farm was only registered in favour of the Mhinga people, but only after the death of Hosi Sundhuza Mhinga I. This farm Mhinga Location Extention 259 MT was only registered in 1921, but that did not address the land dispossession. Another important milestone for Hosi Sundhuza Mhinga I was that he was the first leader or Hosi of the Maluleke clan to accept religion. He invited the Swiss Missionaries in1883 to come and establish churches in his area. The first church was built by Rev Rosset at Dzombyeni in the Sengwe region of the present Zimbabwe. This is very interesting because at that time, the Mhinga area went beyond the Limpopo River up to where the Soutpansburg mountains end in Zimbabwe. The first church at the present Mhinga area was built at Xilaxu in 1899. Rev Abraham established another church at Hutwini at Makuleke Location which was also part of the Mhinga area in 1891. Hosi Sundhuza Mhinga I was succeeded by his eldest son, Hosi Nkhavi Sam Mhinga in 1916.
