MIAMI LAKES WINS WITH NEW POLICE CONTRACT! After being sworn in, I immediately got to work on those items I promised to accomplish during the campaign. One of those items was to study the possibility of starting our own police department instead of contracting with Miami-Dade County for police services. The result was the Police Review Committee. Although they determined that it is not feasible at this time to establish our own department, the resulting input from this committee helped our town work out a better contract with Miami-Dade County. Among the changes to the new contract that the Council approved last Tuesday are: 1) Protecting the town from liability that arises because of the misconduct of contracted Miami-Dade police officers. 2) Payment to the town of any forfeiture fees for asset seizures made in the town regardless of whether the investigation was initiated by Miami Lakes or not. 4) Allowing the Town Commander and Town Manager greater control to limit frivolous overtime costs. Thank you to the Police Review Committee and the town administration for their hard work. The newly revised police contract is truly a win for Miami Lakes!
