MICHIGAN EMERGENCY WEATHER NOTIFICATION UPDATE FORECAST BY DAVE SAURER: UPPER PENINSULA/NORTHERN LOWER MI: WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT from 12 PM EST Christmas Eve through 7 AM Christmas Morning.......Fog is reducing visibility across the region to one half mile especially across Eastern Upper and North Central and Northeastern Lower Michigan at this hour. Surface analysis showing a frontal boundary extending from the region into Western Lower Michigan. Surface low pressure over Wisconsin will continue to eject Northward as the cyclogenesis takes place across the Lower MS Valley and heading into the Ohio Valley, overnight. This is the system that will cause a lot of wind and headaches for forecasters. Snow is expected by Christmas Eve PM into the morning of Christmas with accumulations 3-5 inches with locally up to six inches possible. CENTRAL/WESTERN LOWER MI: Low pressure is moving Northward from the Gulf Coast for this evening and through Christmas Eve then intensifying as it crosses into Southeastern Lower Michigan and Lake Huron for Christmas Eve PM. This system is expected to bring widespread rainfall around an inch or so with some embedded risk for thunderstorms and damaging wind gusts across Southeastern Lower Michigan. A band of accumulating wet slushy snow could impact travel expected WEST of the low track from Central Illinois to Western and Northern Lower Michigan for Christmas Eve PM. Drier weather will prevail for Christmas Day with highs in the middle 30s. Temperatures remaining above normal through the weekend with colder air arriving by Sunday as an Arctic air mass moves in and lake enhancement snowfall will arrive by New Years Holiday! EASTERN LOWER MICHIGAN: Low pressure center is moving just to the Northwest of the region bringing light rain and drizzle across the region. Temperatures will remain mild for tonight with rain showers expected from the Gulf of Mexico streaming Northward. Low will than continue to track Northeastward and rain chances continues for Christmas Eve. Expect the rain to change over to snow by tomorrow evening as colder air arrives in the region. SNOWMAP IS A BIT TOO MUCH in my taste for the actual forecast....I will watch this closely, I really think the NAM is swelling this way too much.
