MIDDAY HIGH LIGHTS On the local news Steps are being taken here to improve the level of communication by telephone within the Public Service, by upgrading the PBX system currently in use. The project is to be undertaken as part of the second phase of the Caribbean Regional Communications Infrastructure Program, (CARCIP) Program, which is expected to get underway by June this year. CARCIP is a 25-million US dollars Regional Program, funded by the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank. The project is designed to bridge the gaps in the national and regional information and communications infrastructure and enhance the connectivity of participating countries. Local Project Co-ordinator for CARCIP, Roxanne John said preparations are being made to request submissions for proposals for the development of this Government PBX System. And The Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Lenmore Grant, 25yrs, of Mayreau which occurred about 7:30 pm at Mayreau on 27 of april 2014. Grant reportedly sustained chop wound about his body and succumbed to the injuries. A young man is in custody assisting the police with investigations. Mean while The following persons were arrested and charged with possession of controlled drug over the weekend period Richard Providence, 20yrs, labourer of Ottley Hall, 2,770 grammes of cannabis with intent to supply it to another, at Georgetown on 25 of April 2014. Leroy Cuffy, 22yrs, fisherman of Barrouallie, 665 grammes of cannabis, with intent to supply it to another, at Kingstown on 25 of April 2014. Errol Waldon, 49yrs, farmer of Victoria Village, 467 grammes of cannabis, with intent to supply it to another, at Diamond on 25.04.14. More on the local news The Emergency Response Programme initiated by the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society to assist persons affected by the floods of December 2013 is now winding down. Communications Officer for the local Red Cross Society, Rendall Allen says the Society is now soliciting feed-back from persons who received assistance, by placing boards at strategic locations in the affected communities. Mr. Allen said the Boards which are being placed at Health Clinics also contain information relating to a range of health issues Further on the local news Chairman of the Gospel Fest Committee Fidel Taylor says the time has come for a major restructuring for the Annual Gospel Festival, which is into its 12th year. Mr. Taylor’s remarks came on Sunday as the festival came to a close. He said the festival is not only facing difficulties with sponsorship due to economic hardships, but it is also seeing a decline in participation due to the migration of artistes. He said there is a need for re-building as there was once a time when the festival would feature around 45 dance groups which has now declined to twelve and where there were twelve to fifteen bands Mr. Taylor said the committee is struggling to get at least three bands. Mr. Taylor pointed out that the festival does not belong to the committee it belongs to the churches, and hence, he called on the churches to own the festival and make a more substantial input. He said the committee is working towards getting more exposure for local gospel artistes. On the regional news CASTRIES, St Lucia -- A prominent local hotelier is believed to have been murdered in Saint Lucia.The victim’s charred body was found in the burnt-out wreckage of a Range Rover in an exclusive resort area in the north of the island. An active police investigation is being conducted into the matter but, in the absence of definitive identification of the body and an official statement from law enforcement based on a postmortem due to be conducted on Monday, local authorities were unable to name the individual, or say precisely how he met his death. However, British media identified the victim as 38-year-old Oliver Gobat, whose family owns and operates the luxurious Cap Maison hotel in Saint Lucia. Gobat was also the executive director of The Landings Hotel, once described as one of the Caribbean’s top 25 luxury resort hotels. Local police said they had been trying to locate Gobat, who was reported missing by his family on Friday. The discovery of the charred remains brings to three the number of dead bodies to have been found in the north of the island so far this month. Previously, the body of a 22-year-old man was found, with residents near the area claiming that there was a sack over the head and the hands were bound. In a separate incident, the decomposed body of a yet unidentified individual was found in bushes.
