MIDDAY THURSDAY: Getting Baltimoreans in the poorest neighborhoods to live healthier lives is one of the top challenges of public health officials. Prominent funeral director Erich March and his wife, Michele Speaks-March, are doing their part. Disturbed by the premature deaths to diabetes and hypertension they saw in East Baltimore, they established a grocery store in one of their community’s “food deserts.” But providing healthy food is one thing; breaking habits and deep cultural connections to certain foods is another.
