MIGRATION Tell them also to take wagons with them from Egypt for their wives and small children... They are not to worry about leaving their possessions behind; the best in the whole land of Egypt will be theirs. Genesis 45:19,20 The problem of employment is a huge issue throughout the world today. It is particularly acute amongst younger people. And they ask, sometimes repeatedly, “Should we venture out to another country? Maybe there is a better future somewhere else”. For Jacob’s family the grass was definitely greener in Egypt than it had been in Israel. The warm invitation of the Pharaoh and his generous provision of transport left them with no option but to accept. However comfortable and settled they might have been, there was now “corn in Egypt”. And food was vital then as now. The modern way of popping off to a country at the other end of the world to get employment is nothing new. People have always migrated in search of a better life, more money, more prospects, and a rosier future. And for some, family reasons have been a motivating factor. Migration is neither good nor bad in itself. It has advantages in some circumstances and disadvantages in others. Throughout the Bible people, often whole nations, were moving around. This is often portrayed as being at the call of God, but there were usually political or security issues as well. For the Christian believer, the whole of life is a process of migration, for “there is no permanent city for us here on earth; we are looking for the city which is to come” (Heb 13:14 GNB). Make sure that, wherever you choose to live on earth, Christ is your final destination. FOR REFLECTION: Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land.
