MIMICKED MISFIRE #fordterritory #Diesel #runoutofpetrol Mimicked Misfire is an engine protection strategy, designed for one purpose........to prevent people from driving a car until it runs out of fuel, specifically Diesel fuel. Manufacturers know that running out of fuel can cause costly engine damage, so they design strategies to prevent it. High pressure Diesel systems need the cooling and lubricating properties of the fuel itself. High pressure fuel pumps can be damaged if they are cranked, even for a few seconds, with no fuel. Even worse, metal filings from the damaged pump usually find their way into the engine. It also seems apparent that fuel gauges and warning lights are not enough to convince some drivers to stop and get fuel. So, we have drivers who won’t put fuel in their cars and engines which are damaged if you don’t. The answer, it seems, is to make the car feel like it’s running out of fuel long before it actually does. The Ford territory is one such vehicle. When the fuel gets low, the engine begins to “mimic” a misfire. This misfire, coupled with warning lights etc prompts the driver to pull over and stop the engine.......hopefully. If fuel is added at this point, the car will start and the misfire mimic will cease. However, if the driver keeps driving the car until it actually does run dry, then the system will need to be bled as per the factory procedure (remember, the pump can be damaged by cranking for a few seconds). We’ve seen vehicles which will not start while at the Diesel bowsers. It can’t be a fuel problem; after all they drove up to the pumps. That seemed the case, until the console operator told us the cars were pushed into the service station! These cars were driven until dry despite having a misfire mimic strategy.
