MINISTER of Communications Dina Pule broke hearts telling a story of her humble beginnings in a packed Rivers of Living Waters Church in the Vaal, south of Joburg on Sunday. Pule was one of many special guests who witnessed the church’s founder, Bishop Zondo conferred to an Archbishop, Doctor of Divinity and Professor by the Interdenominational Theological Center. “I didn’t have money to go to school and relied on a bursary from the South African Council of Churches and later another bursary from government,” she said, whilst encouraging young people to go to school. “My mother sold our kitchen unit so I could go to school. In her bedroom, she didn’t have a bed but prayed for me every day,” she said. Pule challenged youngsters to believe in themselves and go out of their way to get an education. She said: “I didn’t have anybody to look up to in my family, I didn’t have a role model as I was the first one to get a degree. I looked up to my teachers and today I’m a teacher by profession.” The Minister also pleaded with mothers to pray for their children like her mother did when times were tough. “Ngiyindlalifa yemithandazo kaMama wami (I’m reaping rewards for my mother’s prayers). She would pray for me even when my eyes were closed,” she said. After her 10-minute speech, many in the audience were left in tears as Pule received a standing ovation on her way to take her seat in the crowd.
