PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (SUGAR) Teething problems a part of crushing season: FSC – Cane farmers must understand that teething problems at the sugar mills happen at the start of any crushing season says Fiji Sugar Corporation Executive Chair Abdul Khan. The 11 contractors met with the cane access roads committee and outlined the reasons behind the delay in their work. Fiji First Party leader Voreqe Bainimarama is in the cane farming community of Nawaicoba outside Lautoka. While there he also met with families over an age old issue, water supply. Families thanked Bainimarama for pushing the Water Authority of Fiji to connect homes in the area to piped water. KUBUABOLA (FOREIGN AFFAIRS/INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION) Leweni takes up Shanghai appointment – Fiji’s Counsellor to China, Neumi Leweni has taken up his appointment as the Consul-General to China’s financial hub and largest city, Shanghai. Joining Consul-General Leweni is his deputy, Mukhtar Khan who will be responsible for the promotion of trade relations. COKANASIGA (NATIONAL SECURITY) PSC and Police build stronger bonds – The Fiji Police Force is interested in building a stronger more fruitful relationship with the Public Service Commission. MINISTER T. L NATUVA (PUBLIC UTILITIES) Work on restoring the landmark Government Building Clock has started. The project comes under the office of the Chief Justice in the Judicial Department. Last year the Public Works Department was initially asked to inspect the actual moving parts of the 76 year old clock which had stopped operating. Fiji TV News 6PM (TRANSPORT) LTA conducts speed review tests – The proposed new national road speed test is on trial on some roads. This will be carried out until December. MINISTER J. LUVENI (SOCIAL WELFARE) Life for a group of Fiji women in the central division should become a little easier this coming Thursday. This should come with the launch of what’s being termed as the “F-J Rocket Stove project.” Minister for Social Welfare and Women Dr Jiko Luveni is expected to hand over 22 new Rocket Stoves to members of the Neelgiri Mother’s Club in Saweni. Fiji TV News 6PM A group of women in Naivilaca Village in Noco, Rewa are reaping the financial benefits of a project they started in 2012. The project was initiated by some 30 women in Naivilaca after $5000 funding by the Ministry of Social Welfare. Naivilaca Women’s group president Loraini Bokalaca said the poultry business has now developed into a profitable venture in their rural community. Fiji TV News 6PM (WOMEN) Zero Tolerance Violence Free communities to report on crimes – Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr. Jiko Luveni said communities that have been declared Zero Tolerance Violence Free will have increasing number of crime reports. Luveni said this is because people of these communities especially women are now more empowered and encouraged to report against crime. Luveni added that the effectiveness of this campaign will be seen in five years’ time. SERUIRATU Seruiratu undecided on election – Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Lieutenant-Colonel Inia Seruiratu is still to decide whether he will contest the forthcoming elections. Lt-Col Seruiratu was sworn in to as minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests in 2012 to replace Joketani Cokanasiga who is now Defence minister. USAMATE (LABOUR) A cane farmer from Labasa Rusiate Waqa has become one of the individuals benefiting from the Foreign Employment Service (FORES) since its establishment last year. SHARMA (HEALTH) Additional staff to improve health services: Dr Neil – Fijis Minister for Health says the additional 553 new staff to be added to its workforce will help efforts to boost health services around the country. Dr Neil Sharma said with additional numbers, the ministry will be able to provide the best available health services.
