MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT SENSITISES TRANSPORT UNIONS ON EVD The Rivers State Ministry of Transport has organised a one day sensitization programme on the Ebola Virus Disease for the executive members of Transport Unions in Rivers State. The Commissioner Ministry of Transport Hon. George Tolofari said that the purpose of the awareness programme to sensitize the union on the reported cases of persons with the EVD in Port Harcourt Hon. Tolofari noted that since the virus is transmitted through physical contact with someone who has shown symptoms of having the virus, commercial drivers and their passengers are likely to be at risk also. The Commissioner who was represented by the Director of Administration of the Ministry Mrs. Abulo Boma appealed to transport unions to report all cases of suspected Ebola victims to the Ministry of Health. The Medical Epidemiologist from the Ebola emergency operation centre Lagos Mr. Ogunniyi Abiodum disclosed that Ebola is not a death sentence for the victim as there are supportive medical care that could be used to sustain patients if detected and reported on time. He advised drivers not to over cram their taxis and buses so as to reduce direct physical contact among passengers since Ebola is also transmitted through direct physical contact. The Epidemiologist said that all commercial drivers should insist on the presentation of a death certificate before transporting any corpse, because the corpse of an Ebola victim could still infect others with the virus. The medical scientist advised drivers to be wary of passengers who manifest the symptoms of Ebola such as high fever, weakness of the body, vomiting and diarrhoea and call this toll free number; 0800326524357 in all case of Ebola. The National Union of Road Transport Workers Secretary Sir Chuks Bums assured the Ministry that these points would be fully compiled to by the various Transport Unions.
