MINT Leap Year TOMORROW 2013/14 Residents Exhibit Opening 9/5 at Erikson Clock on.fb.me/VqxN7d Profile 2/3: Vanessa Williams via Vanessa Williams: When we concentrate on a material object, whatever its situation, the very act of attention may lead to our involuntary sinking into the history of that object” -Nabokov, Transparent Things The complex way in which we experience our surroundings is the underlying theme in my practice as a sculptor and installation artist. Intent on creating unusual experiences, I utilize the referential qualities of objects and imagery alongside the formal elements of materials and space to create works that intermingle the familiar with the unfamiliar. In whole, these works can be read as subtle assemblages that constitute broad atmospheric phenomena. Untitled, 2014 is an installation that is further informed by my interest in perceptual discussions, visual effects that boarder on optical illusions. Within this piece I implement traditional methods for drawing in perspective through three-dimensional materials to create a space where the depth is unclear from certain vantage points. Rather than mere visual trickery the viewer is invited to explore how they perceive the physical space. It can be a jump point where a physical object references the intangible. - Vanessa Williams ____ What is Leap Year?
