MJC to march: Thousands are expected to respond to a call by the Muslim Judicial Council and gather in Kaizergracht in Cape Town on Wednesday morning for a march to Parliament to protest the killing of protestors in Egypt. The march will be joined by other organisations, including the African National Congress (ANC) and the Congress of the South African Trade Unions (Cosatu). "The purpose of the march is to protest against the violent coup that took place recently in Egypt and also the resultant mass killing of protesters against the coups. As South Africans we feel it is our responsibility to respond to any undemocratic processes and state terrorism taking pace in Africa," said MJC spokesperson Nabeweya Mallick. “We as a democratic nation call on to all countries to stand together in South Africa. We have therefore invited the Turkish, Somali and Pakistani and other communities locally to support the protest. The MJC will be handing over a memorandum to the South African government to engage with the Egyptian embassy on this issue as soon as possible,” she added. Speaking on VOC on Monday evening, MJC president Maulana Igsaan Hendricks emphasised that the Muslim community could not stand idly by while innocent people were being brutally killed in daily massacres. At the same time, the ulema body made it clear that instead of backing the ousted Egyptian leader, Muhammad Mursi specifically, it was more concerned that the coup that scuppered a legitimate democratic process in the northern African country. Earlier this week, the Claremont Main Road Mosque in Cape Town called for an end to the violence in Egypt and for the restoration of democratic rule. VOC/SABC
