MLK Day Musings: yesterday we were in the new College Avenue - TopicsExpress

MLK Day Musings: yesterday we were in the new College Avenue Safeway, finishing up our shopping, when 20-30 African-American demonstrators surrounded the registers. They began to call the names of black victims of institutional violence with a chant, fists raised to the sky, #blacklivesmatter signs in clear view. A few aisles were blocked but they didnt interfere with customers checking out. They were well-organized, bringing their message from one Rockridge gathering point to another. Our cashier, whom I perceived as mixed race, expressed concern that his newly re-opened place of employment didnt need to be on TV with this, but he checked in with the young black bagger whod just had an evidently uncomfortable conversation with an older white woman. I was lost how to respond. I support the message, I support the well-organized protest, impactful and respectful. I didnt feel it offered me a way to express my support, to raise my fist in support. What am I missing?
