MOBIA (The Museum of Biblical Art.) announces an upcoming lecture series in conjunction with the exhibition “Dürer, Rembrandt, Tiepolo: The Jansma Master Print Collection from the Grand Rapids Art Museum” Dürer’s Printed Passions Dr. Larry Silver, University of Pennsylvania Wednesday, November 5 6:30 pm MOBIA (61st and Broadway) The greatest printmaker of his age, Albrecht Dürer often depicted the Passion in print and paint. In this lecture, Dr. Larry Silver will examine the varied printed series of the Passion, including the Small Woodcut Passion, the Large Woodcut Passion, and the Engraved Passion, the last of which is on view in the exhibition. Because Dürer produced prints using woodcut and engraving, he developed new techniques within each medium, especially after his trip to Venice in 1505-7. * Giambattista to Giandomenico Tiepolo: from Tradition to Innovation in Christian Narrative Dr. William Barcham, Fashion Institute of Technology Wednesday, November 12 6:30 pm MOBIA (61st and Broadway) Though often regarded as merely a passive follower of his father Giambatista Tiepolos art, Giandomenico in fact innovated in his own right. Nowhere does this surface better than in his series of almost two dozen engravings on the story of the holy familys Flight into Egypt. Altering a subject whose dramatic possibilities were almost downplayed in the history of painting, Giandomenico instead emphasized the wonder inherent in travel, the risks Mary and Joseph faced in protecting their infant son and the dangers they undertook when wandering into new lands. * Rembrandt, Biblical Stories, and the Everyday Dr. Nadine Orenstein, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Wednesday, December 10 6:30 pm MOBIA (61st and Broadway) Rembrandt carefully observed the world around him, his family, people on the street, animals, and landscape. He captured people’s attitudes and emotions in abundant drawn sketches and prints. This talk will look at how Rembrandt’s study of the everyday informed his approach to biblical narratives.
