MOGGIE MEWS - PURRFECT PALS: CARING CAT WALKS BOY TO SCHOOL EACH DAY Cat accompanies anxious three-year-old boy to school to ease his nerves Opening of schools is pretty important to all students yet it means a bit more to those going to school for the first time. FELINE nervous about going to school is no fun when you’re three years old. But there’s a model black-and-white moggy in Sandy who is helping her little human, William Dutton, overcome his fear by walking him each day to the school gates. The adorable duo’s special bond started back even before William was born. According to Mum Victoria, Milly Moo loved stroking her paw gently at her bump, in what Victoria describes as a ‘protective’ gesture. She said: “It’s like she has a sixth sense for him. I can’t explain it – cats are generally pretty selfish so I think she is quite unusual.” William, usually a confident child, suffers anxiety in new or unfamiliar settings. So when his mum told him about starting school he grew frightened. His nerves were so bad that he was reluctant to even put on his shoes, but all that changed after a kind gesture from their pet cat Milly Moo. Victoria, 34, of Waverley Avenue, said: “Milly Moo came over and sat with him while he tied his shoes – I could just see the fear drain away,” But Milly Moo’s support for William didn’t end there. The concerned kitty cat decided to take it upon herself to accompany the boy and his mum on their 13-minute trip to Maple Tree Lower School, making sure that his anxiety didn’t return. If that isn’t enough, every lunchtime without fail, six-year-old Milly Moo would come along with Victoria when she goes to pick up William from school. Victoria said, “We used to get a lot of attention and comments on the school run with Milly Moo following us, but now she is a familiar sight!” William said: “I love Milly Moo walking to school with me. She is funny and I like giving her treats!” It was just what William needed and now he can’t wait for his journey to pre-school with his best friend by his side. Just like Slinky Malinki the hero cat, Milly has now been shortlisted as a finalist in the Cats Protection charity’s National Cat Awards. Which if she wins, will put her in the running for the National Cat of the Year.
