MONDAY AM WEATHER FORECAST Today: A wet start with southwesterly gales, but soon clearing to bright intervals and heavy wintry showers. Winds will turn westerly and increase to severe gale or storm force. Some hail and perhaps the odd rumble of thunder is also possible. Maximum Temperature: 5 Deg C (41 Deg F) Tonight: Storm force westerly winds at first but easing to a strong or gale force southwesterly. Wintry showers continuing with snow to low levels at times with a few icy patches. Minimum Temperature: 0 Deg C (32 Deg F) Tuesday: Another cold day with bright intervals and sleet or snow showers, these most frequent over Shetland. Best of the brightness across eastern Orkney. Strong southwesterly winds. Maximum Temperature: 4 Deg C (39 Deg F) Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Sunny spells and scattered wintry showers Wednesday but becoming windy later with rain or sleet. Staying unsettled thereafter with rain or wintry showers and very strong winds at times. Coastal Waters Forecast for Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney Wind: West 5 to 7, backing south 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 later in north. Visibility: Good, occasionally moderate later. Weather: Showers, rain later. Sea State: Slight in Moray Firth, otherwise moderate or rough, occasionally very rough later in north. Coastal Waters Forecast for Shetland Isles Wind: Northwest 6 or 7, occasionally gale 8, backing west 5 to 7, occasionally 4 for a time, then backing south 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 later.
