MONDAY EQUINE TIP: We have already seen our first freeze of the year in most parts of the state. We have also already heard of several horses that have coliced. Although horses can colic for many different reasons, one of the most common is decreased water intake associated with changes in weather. The typical horse should consume between 10-14 gallons of water daily. There are several factors that affect water intake, including the amount of dry matter consumed. With cooler temperatures, we tend to feed our horses more hay; with increased consumption of dry matter, water intake should increase to help prevent compaction colic. Research has shown that some horses don’t consume cold water very well. Providing warm water (between 45-65°F) can help increase intake. Heated buckets or trough heaters are important as we head into the winter months. Stop by your local Co-op and get stocked up for the winter months ahead.
