MONDAY, February 3 John 6:28. What must we do to perform the works of God? I work in a state-funded psychiatric hospital; this means we serve people who can’t afford psychiatric care anywhere else. We serve people who have been told “No” by everyone else. I was on one of the wards, in the middle of working on a project, when I heard a small voice say, “Can you see if there are some socks in that drawer?” It was a young lady. Her eyes barely glanced up. Her hair was in a mess and her clothes wrinkled and stained. I looked in the drawer she indicated and, finding no socks, said, “Sorry, ma’am. I don’t know where they keep them; I don’t work back here.” Less than two minutes later, I heard her ask another worker. I almost interrupted to inform the worker that I’d already looked when I saw the worker open another drawer, right next to the one I’d impatiently searched. “Here you go, hon, there’s you some socks,” and she handed the young lady her socks. As the girl put them on, I began to wonder when I—or my work—had become so important as to supersede fulfilling a quiet young lady’s simple request for socks to cover her bare feet.
