MONEY TALKS: America Has Lost Its Colombian Mind “We should live henceforward in amity… unitedly glorying in the name of a Columbian…” Ezra Stiles (1727–1795) American theologian and author; president of Yale College (1778–1795) America, during the founding era, was commonly referred to as Columbia; which was understood to mean a nation with God’s spirit. A Columbian was understood to be a citizen of Columbia; a citizen with God’s spirit. Popular Colombian leaders of that era speak from the face of our modern currency: $1 George Washington: “Bless O Lord, the whole race of mankind, and let the world be filled with the knowledge of Thee and thy Son, Jesus Christ…” $2 Thomas Jefferson: “Almighty God...through obedience to Thy law, may we show forth Thy Praise among the nations of the earth... through Jesus Christ our Lord ...” $5 Abraham Lincoln: “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this Book.” $10 Alexander Hamilton: Let an association be formed to be denominated “The Christian Constitutional Society,” its object to be first: The support of the Christian Religion, and second: The support of the United States” $20 Andrew Jackson: “Rely on our dear Savior... Trust in the mercy and goodness of Christ, and always be ready to say with heartfelt resignation, may the Lords will be done.” $50 Ulysses S Grant: “My advice to Sunday schools, no matter what their denomination, is: hold fast to the Bible as the sheet anchor of your liberties; right its precepts in your hearts, and practice them in your lives.” $100 Benjamin Franklin: “Heavenly father, may all revere thee, and become thy dutiful children and faithful servants. May thy laws be obeyed on earth as perfectly as they are in heaven.” $1000 Grover Cleveland: “All must admit that the reception of the teachings of Christ results in the purest patriotism, in the most scrupulous fidelity to public trust, and in the best type of citizenship.” The Founding Fathers put the welfare of their new nation squarely in the hands of the Christian church. The modern church is failing to satisfy that expectation… America suffers as a result.
