MONGO SANTAMARIA WorkinOn A Groovy Thing Columbia Records (CS-9937) The title WorkinOn A Groovy Thing seems rather tame when you consider the nuclear explosives contained in the grooves of this album (Groovy, yes but blasting all the way.) Mongos fissionable percussion is famous from coast to coast as some of the most joyful jolting ever heard. You not only hear it, you feel it - it goes into you through the eardrums & simultaneously through every pore. Mongos group performance is not merely entertainment - it is a fantastic experience! The essence of the Santamaria Sound is impossible to put into words, but it is basically a blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms interwoven with American-derived jazz, & a touch of rhythm & blues, a dash of soul, a touch of rock - the whole which is prodigiously larger then the sum of the parts. The main reason for this is the titanic jet-propelled drive of Mongos bongos, congas, & other exotic percussive devices that propel his band to heights of fervor rarely equalled by any other group. In this collection the great Mongo gives you his exciting distinctive versions of some of todays now-sounds. There is the hard-driving, hand dosed rhythm (Mongos trademark), plus the great reed & brass sections with the wild alto sax up front. Yes, here is Mongo resplendent!...And what a bag of current goodies it is - well, theres all kinds of chartsville action here. WorkinOn A Groovy Thing, Spinning Wheel (a blockbuster), We Got Latin Soul (the essence of Mongo), My Cherie Amor, Get Back (Bestlesville), Aint That Peculiar, & Twenty Five Miles. All that ought to put you at least twenty five miles high. Dont fight it - dig it - you may never be the same again. And youll be glad. Enjoy! Side A 1. WorkinOn A Groovy Thing 2. Spinning Wheel 3.
