MONSTERS UNIVERSITY REVIEW : Well got back from the exclusive showing of Monsters University from Disney PIXAR for our local elementary school ( I got invited by the school to go with them ) and I gotta say I loved how they decorated the theatre for the ocassion , they had real doors lying around decorated with hearts and stickers and the posters got replaced with flyers or student made signs for the ficitional university featured in the film , gotta say it was a nice touch. Now before we review the movie , I would like to review the short that premiered with Monsters University called The Little Blue Umbrella , its about a live action setting where bricks , pipes and streetlights are all alive with some CGI touches in a live action setting and about a blue umbrella trying to find a red umbrella it meets while waiting at a light , I gotta say this was one of the best shorts from PIXAR from a artistic point. Now on to the movie itself , it was a major upgrade from the disaster that was Cars 2 and a little better from last years mixed Brave ( some liked it , some hated it ) , the plot is mainly about Mike ( Billy Crystal) arriving at the famous Monsters University to prove himself as the best scarer the university has seen but in his way are Sulley ( John Goodman ) , the ever confident jock who lives up to the family name and the dean of the university Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren) who sets out to expel them from the scaring program due to shenanigans the duo has done early on in the film. To Disney fans, the Dean may resemble the Grand Councilwoman from Lilo and Stitch and even her voice sounds similar but overall the dean is truly a frightening and great addition to the cast. To add to this cast is Randall and his origin on why he hates the duo and the nerdish frat house they have to help win the Scare Games are great funny new additions to the line-up of characters. The other frat teams and universities are well designed each of them being a certain sterotype from colleges including jocks, goths, cheerleaders and such. The animation and look of the buildings and nature (trees, water, rocks and sand) are some of the best Ive seen from PIXAR. While the animation is wonderful, my only problem with the movie is the plot, it is VERY VERY cut and paste which makes it predictable, if you have watched all the PIXAR movies, the usual buddy movie tropes are in this film , but that dosent make it bad by no means. I gotta say the last 20 minutes are the best in the movie personally but you will have to see it for yourselves to know why. Lets just say it made me cry a little. Overall, while featuring a pretty standard plot, the characters, locations and jokes makes up for it, it is one of the best PIXAR movies to come out recently, I recommend you go see it. And oh yeah watch at the ending for cameos of characters from the first movie , its hilarious to say the least.
