MONTI-LICIOUS NOV. 29, 2013 The American Music Awards was highlighted by the multitalented Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and the incredible Jennifer Lopez . Her tribute to the late Celia Cruz was a show in itself. Her singing, dancing, on-stage costume changes and performance in general brought the entire house to its feet. Bravo to Jenny from the Bronx. Pitbull, the Latino rap star, proved to be a formidable host, using his winning personality to proper advantage. Katy Perry as a Geisha, and Gaga on horseback, were also highlights. Taylor Swift was also a multiple-winner again (ho-hum). Cirque du Soleil is in the process of revamping Ka and Zarkana so as to refresh them, and more importantly, to add safety features and avoid accidents like those that happened this year. These two presentations have yet to reach the success of their original Las Vegas show, Mystere. Too many productions of this type become repetitious. Their production of Elvis turned into a casualty and should have been tweaked early on and become the hit it could have been. That show, Michael One and Criss Angels Believe are the favorites of this columnist, Spider-Man the Musical is just about set to be a 2015 attraction at the Venetian. This multimillion dollar production is closing in New York and the producers feel that Las Vegas is the perfect place to support this most costly show. They were able to solve the safety and mechanical problems, which hampered the production at the beginning. This should be a great addition to the attractions on the Strip. Are we ready for Britney Spears at Planet Hollywood? Britney is busy, busy, busy with her show, restaurant, new perfume line, etc. She does have what seems to be a great marketing team behind her, but it still remains to be seen if she can maintain the two-year residency and fill that huge venue. Only Celine Dion has done that, and Britney is no Celine. . Why dont we leave Alec Baldwin alone? Paparazzi keep hounding him, knowing how to bring on his explosive temper. Alec does need anger management therapy, but he is not wrong in trying to protect his family from the claws of the hungry stalkers and parasites. My hats off to Whoopi Goldberg and her HBO documentary on Moms Mabley. This entertainer was one of the great female comediennes of all time and most likely the first female to do stand-up. Mom ,with no teeth, her apron and woolen cap, was something to behold. She was edgy, but never went over the edge. All types of people could and did relate to her hilarious storytelling. I wish someone would produce a documentary on Celia Cruz, the great Cuban singer who could show them all how to do IT. Learning about entertainers of the past would show the newcomers how easy they have it because of the barriers broken down by these old-timers. The pirate show, Sirens, at Treasure Island suddenly closed down to make way for a new shopping center, putting a multitude number of performers out of work. They wont forget this holiday season, thats for sure! The hotel is reportedly working on developing a new water show until the reconstuction is final. The Tropicana will be breaking ground next year on a new two-level enclosed shopping center at the front of the property.with restaurants overlooking the Strip. This is only one of the changes being made to renovate this iconic hotel/casino. The Golden Nugget will add a major 4:00p.m, show to its entertainment roster. The new show Pawn Shop: The Live Show! Producers feel that good 4:00p.m. shows will be very successful, noting that matinees on Broadway are almost always sold out. They feel that can happen here too. There are several other 4:00p.m. reportedly in the works including shows produced by the young and talented John Bentham. The Rev.Monti hopes everyone had a great holiday weekend and as always wishes you only the best.
