MORE 2014 Samways Cycles HIGHLIGHTS Le Tour de France and Le Grand Depart It has to be said that this was a personal, highlight for Nick and Kate Samways who, were delighted to go to Harrogate to see Stage 1 of the Tour from Leeds to Harrogate on Saturday 5 July 2014. We arrived in Harrogate early on Friday evening and there was great excitement the knitted jersey bunting was everywhere and there were so many yellow bikes it was amazing. The barriers were in place, the TV screens and production companies were ready, it promised to be an amazing finish to the Stage in Harrogate. Early Saturday morning the crowds were gathering, on foot or by bike and people were getting their position near the finish line hours before the Stage was due to end. We met some fantastic French people who were great fun and as the Tour began the sun shone and the atmosphere was electric. We were so lucky to view the race from the iconic Bettys Tea Rooms. Thanks to Specialized Bicycles we watched the tour on big screens while eating the yummy world renowned Fat Rascals, a wonderful Yorkshire scone. Having watched the cyclists cycle throughout the stunning scenery of Yorkshire, they were soon approaching the finish. We had marvelled at the spectacle of the caravan, with the Yorkshire Tea float getting the loudest cheer of the day. We all so desperately wanted Mark Cavendish to win. We were on our feet shouting, then suddenly 300m from the finish line he fell. The crowd gasped, it was all over for Cav. but for Kittel it was victory. What an amazing day, we will never forget.
