MORE BRITISH JUSTICE - Legal aid is denied to the family of a victim of a police shooting Scotland Yard has issued a public apology to the family of an innocent woman who was shot by police in Brixton – a tragedy which sparked the 1985 riots. Cherry Groce’s injuries paralysed her, and she died 26 years later. Yet despite this, at her inquest, which begins in the next few weeks, her family has been denied legal aid. The Met, and the man who fired the fatal shot, Douglas Lovelock, will be represented by the country’s best legal brains, but Cherry’s relatives will be left to fend for themselves. This is of crucial importance because two pathologists have concluded that her death in 2011 was directly linked to the injuries she sustained that fateful night. So the inquest is the family’s chance to secure the justice they believe has so far eluded them. The Met said in a statement that they’re prepared to go public with an apology they made privately to Cherry’s family last year. Simon Israel has the full story, and I’ve just interviewed the family’s MP Chuka Umunna, who calls on ministers to overturn the legal aid decision, and says the Met remains institutionally racist.
