MORE FLOOD INSURANCE ADVICE In order to further elaborate on the post from yesterday about not talking to insurance companies until you have read your policies, I thought some sample policy provision may help further illustrate the concern. The typical homeowners policy has the following language concerning loss of personal property (contents of your home): COVERAGE C – PERSONAL PROPERTY We insure for direct physical loss to the property described in Coverage C caused by a peril listed below unless the loss is excluded in the General Exclusions. 1. Fire or lightning. 2. Windstorm or hail. This peril does not include loss to: a. property contained in a building caused by rain, snow, sleet, sand or dust unless the direct force of wind or hail damages the building causing an opening in a roof or wall and the rain, snow, sleet, sand or dust enters through this opening; So what is critical is whether some opening was caused by wind or hail caused the opening. As you probably can imagine, there are various ways that water makes its way into a home and until you have explored every possible source it is not in your best interest to give answers. Matthew Salvator at Salvator and Associates, Insurance in Gulf Breeze provided some sample language found in policies like the one cited above and we will be providing more of those later today. Thanks to Matt for the samples. Again, keep your mouth shut until you have read your own policy.
