MORE GARY INDIANA SCHOOL CLOSINGS, MORE ABANDONED BUILDINGS, MORE URBAN DECAY, MORE HAVENS FOR POTENTIAL CRIMES..... #SICKENING: In a 4-2 vote, the board voted to close Watson, Lew Wallace, Dunbar-Pulaski, Brunswick, Lincoln and Webster. The board took action to stem a $27.5 million deficit brought about by overspending in past years, property tax caps and a low property tax collection rate. The closings will leave the city with more high-profile shuttered buildings just as it received a $6.6 million grant to demolish abandoned homes. “This is the Walmartization of our community,” said Gary Teachers Union President Joe Zimmerman on closings and charter schools. The board had received a recommendation to close the Bailly Preparatory Academy but then officials backed off the recommendation after a public outcry last week. The district is struggling to find money to repair its aging buildings, make its payroll and retirement payment obligations.
