MORE INDEPENDENCE FLAMES BURNING HIGHER: ROME — Residents of Venice and its greater surrounding region are voting this week on whether to break away from the rest of Italy and form their own country, organisers said on Monday. Despite protests that any bid to split from Italy would be unconstitutional, Veneto governor Luca Zaia has told Italian media that secession is an option under international law. The online vote, which is organised by local independence parties, is not legally binding but aims to galvanise support for a bill calling for a referendum on whether the region of Veneto should split from Italy.
