MORE IRISH GOVERNMENT SUPPORT OF ANIMAL ABUSE The news that the Budget allocation to Greyhound Racing will be an extra £2.8m this year, instead of the original figure of €1,2m, is a massive boost for the sport and provides a massive positive sign after so much gloom in recent times. It means that the total Government Grant to Greyhound Racing this year will jump from €10.8m to €13.6m. The IGB issued the following statement this evening: IGB STATEMENT The Irish Greyhound Board today warmly welcomed the additional €2.8m assigned to the Irish Greyhound Board in Budget 20.15. This brings the total allocation received through the Horse and Greyhound Racing fund from €10.8m to €13.6m in 2015. The additional funding will be used to implement the IGB response to the recommendations of the Indecon Report, including reducing debt levels, strengthening regulation, growing marketing resources to generate increased attendance throughout the Stadia network and incentivising ownership. The Chairman of the IGB, Mr Phil Meaney said “this is very welcome news and demonstrates the confidence of the Ministers and Government in the Irish Greyhound industry. It also recognises its importance to the economy. There is no doubt that the greyhound industry is undergoing rapid change at this time and these funds will be used assiduously to create a platform for the future. “ In welcoming the increased funds Ms Geraldine Larkin, CEO of the IGB recognised the importance of the funding for the work that needs to be done. She said “the funding is very timely in the wake of the IGB response to the Indecon report and will be prioritised to reduce debt, generate new income streams and grow ownership so as to ensure the long term sustainability of the industry.”
