MORE ON MANAGING SHOOTING LINE. Although long cast is not always necessary when we are fishing, everyone dreams to cast a long line to the other side of the bank. Before you start showing off your casting prowess, it might be wise if you master managing the shooting line, otherwise you might embarrass yourself with a tangled line. Mastering to manage a shooting line is the key to a successful long cast. Most of us these days are fishing with Skagit or Scandi lines. The belly of the Skagit line is usually around 20 - 24ft, add 10ft leader/tip, then 5-6ft tippet on a 12’ 6” rod will give us about 52ft set-up on the dangle. If we want to cast 100ft, we will have 48ft of shooting line to manage. Thats a lot of shooting line that we have to thread into our hand or fingers, cast after cast. That amount of line in the water is like a drogue and it will impeding your cast. I honestly will have trouble to manage this amount of line perfectly cast after cast. Even with Scandi line, which on average is 10ft longer than the Skagit, we still have to manage around 38ft of shooting line. Thats still a lot of line in our hand. The story is completely different if we cast mid to long belly lines where we only have to shoot a little bit of line or not at all. There are many different ways of managing shooting lines. One of my favourites is the Ed Ward’s of Skagit Master method. Always clean and pretty much fool proof. There are many videos on managing shooting lines on YouTube, the following are some of my favourites. And you need to practice this until you can do it instinctively.
