MORE PREDICTIONS THAT IMMIGRATION REFORM WILL PASS THIS YEAR In recent weeks, several politicians in Washington have become more outspoken about the fate of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. A couple weeks ago, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, promised that Comprehensive Immigration Reform would pass this year. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the fourth ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, also said that reform is still a priority this year. And earlier this week, Representative Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat from Chicago and a champion of immigration reform, said he was optimistic about Comprehensive Immigration Reform making it through the Republican-led House. Rep. Gutierrez, from the beginning, has pushed for immigration reform while acknowledging the challenges of uniting a divided House to enact legislation. For him to come out, a few months away from mid-term congressional elections, with the declaration that he expects immigration policies to change THIS year, is a promising sign. Gutierrez said that around 25 to 30 Republicans would join Democrats in support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform because the Republican Party understands that its future as a national party, as a national party that can really win national elections, is at stake here.
