MORE THAN 500M WORTH OF COUNTERFEIT AND SMUGGLED GOODS SEIZED BY CIDG The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) seized more than Php 500 million worth of counterfeit and smuggled goods in different areas of Manila in a two-day operation (October 2 and 3, 2014), the CIDG Director said. Police Director Benjamin B. Magalong stated that the operations conducted by the detectives of the Anti-Fraud and Commercial Crimes Unit (AFCCU-CIDG), headed by PSSUPT Bartolome Bustamante, along with the representatives of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPO PHL) , Bureau of Customs (BOC) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), were covered by a Warrant of Seizure and Detention issued by General Mendoza of the Bureau of Customs wherein the said governmental agency has the authority to seize and forfeit products as vested by the Tariff and Customs Code. At No. 1613 Rivera Street, Tondo, Manila, 7 big warehouses were searched by the composite CIDG operatives and they unearthed smuggled goods consisting of batteries, branded kiddie products, steel buttons, perfumes with different brands and other products. Present during the search was Mr. Bobby Teng, the operations manager of the said warehouses. On the other hand, fake NBA jerseys, occupied the whole floor of a warehouse and were immediately forfeited by the said law enforcers. While in La Torre Street, Tondo, Manila, thousands of boxes of fake seasoning products were also seized. Magalong added that the seized items have an estimated value of more than Php 500 Million and believed to be counterfeit. The warrant of seizure and detention had an attached subpoena for the owners to appear before the BOC tribunal while the CIDG will file a case for violation of RA 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines) against them. If the seized items are useful and will not harm the end-users, these will be possibly donated , otherwise, such will be destroyed.
