MORE THAN A MIRAGE Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble,and keep on praying. -- Romans 12:12 NLT Praying can sometimes feel like a lonely, fruitless undertaking. On these days, heartfelt requests and praises seem to hit a wall and bounce back, sounding empty and futile in the echo. The disconnected Christian may feel all alone in her head,and it might seem as though the only audience to her pleadings are her clasped hands. This distance between God and the dispirited Christian can come during any season, whether it is one of turmoil, prosperity, or listlessness. To her, even the Bible may seem dry and irrelevant, fellowship with others shallow,and church services stiff and unhelpful. She might have the sense that she is stumbling across a great desert, lost and thirsty,distracted by the shimmering mirages that falsely promise fulfillment, comfort, or hope. Although these may provide temporal confidence and euphoria, they are often short-lived. The only oasis in the midst of a spiritual desert is the reassurance of Christs resurrection and Gods steadfast character. Through the shifting sands of life, the hazy deception of mirages, and the merciless heat of the sun, He remains all powerful, ever present, and is passionately in love with you. Continue to seek Him in everything, whether in trials, blessings or the mundane. -- HM God, help me not to lose heart when I stagger through the desert. I have cause to rejoice. Amen.
