MORE THANKS-GIVEN NEEDED by Ray Hackett Jr. Every year when thinking about what I want to write about at Thanksgiving I am drawn to the holiday’s meaning on the world that surrounds my life. I think about all the things that are happening around me, good and bad, and find myself counting my many blessings. It’s so hard right now to look at all the things that are happening to our world that are so scary. It seems like we can all share stories about the people in our lives; the dilemmas they are facing and the strengths that are needed to get them through. It’s clear by watching the news that this world we share and learn about life upon is shifting in many ways. When we step back, it should be apparent that each and every one of us need to keep changing our ways for the better. Every deed done on this earth without listening closely to our hearts has to catch up with us, eventually, in some way. If Karma is about reaping what we sow then the world needs to be treated with love in order to be a loving place. Messing with Nature by trying to “make better” what was put here in perfect form (or genetically modifying) like the seeds of the maize that was shared in the first bounty of thanks should be easy to see is wrong. There have been many similar choices made that have taken their course to leading us to see that we were not thankful for what we were given in the first place. Simply put, from the minute we are born we are given choices. We all know inside when we are about to do something that is not right. We feel the love in the right choices and the anxiety of the wrong. Most of us believe in our hearts that we have a higher power (that I call God) but whom I know shares many names. This higher power graced us and blessed us with many gifts and opportunities. Every time throughout history when we have joined forces for the wrong or evil doings, civilizations have crumbled. But every spring we’re given new chances to plant good seeds to hopefully bloom. Every autumn that follows we find ourselves looking back at the year and facing all that we have created for the harvest. When we get together to celebrate every blessing created from good deeds and choices, we in the USA call it Thanksgiving -- a holiday created from coming together for the right reasons and celebrating within the cornucopia called life. Every year at this time we are given the opportunities through traditions to remember all the people in our lives that live within each memory. We all can smile when we remember how we felt when we were children gathering with our families and watching the traditions transpire. We can smell them, feel them see them and touch them every time we recreate the holiday. “Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go” can be sung whether in a horse-drawn buggy, or SUV and whether traveling by memory or GPS. It’s because you are choosing to make the trip that matters. It’s the making of good memories that will live on and help keep our world turning. It’s the good choices that bring on a good day that can make a difference. Making a difference is easier to accomplish when we accept that it really is one good thought, one good action and one good choice at a time. So come on, join in and be thankful. Choose to make your holiday a good day.
