MORNING FRESH WITH JODY BRESCH, Christmas Morning, Thursday, December 25, 2014: I got up later this morning than I had intended to, 7:30 AM. The turkey was still frozen on the insides. I spent forty-five minutes thawing it out in the kitchen sink I had used comet, then clorox, then hot, hot water on for that express purpose. We had to put the oven rack down to the lowest level to get the bird in, that Nia thought we shouldnt call a bird any longer since its dead now. So that barely left me room to get t he top rack back in the oven so I could still attempt to make pumpkin pies. The pre-made pie crusts actually only stuck in a couple of places this time. Do not ask me what it is with me and math too early in the morning. Well, make that morning, noon and night, but I had one of those double cans I was going to make two pies with, right? So why did I put double sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger in my bowl? I dont know why I did, but if it had occurred to me soon enough, I could have divided my dry ingredients in half and use some of it now and some of it later, right? O Only it didnt occur to me soon enough, so then I had to use eight eggs, two cans of pumpkin pie filling, and I now had almost enough filling for four pies, only I only had two pie crusts. It was at this point it occurred to me I should have divided the dry ingredients in half. I still had a problem. Well two problems. I had already added the eggs and the extra pie filling and I only had two cans of evaporated milk. I was getting ready to go to the store, any store than might be open on Christmas Day, to look for evaporated me. It crossed my mind to even call a neighbor and ask if anybody had some, when I thought, If you can divide dry ingredients, then you can divide moist ingredients, right? So I now have enough pumpkin pie filling in two LIpton tea jars in the refrigerator to make another two pies in a couple of days. All I need is two cans of evaporated milk, and two more pie crusts. Im still nervous about the pie. It looked too runny. Im hoping with four eggs in it, the eggs set up and I have two delicious pumpkin pies anyway. Its 10:20 AM, and I can smell the turkey cooking, so that encourages me the turkey will be on time despite the late start. After all, I had already brought the temperature of the bird up in hot water in the kitchen sink, and I had put that water in the pan with my bird so the time it would have taken the oven to bring it up to that temperature, I had already accomplished with my birds warm bath, right? Okay, so you guys see why Im a little bit of a mess in the kitchen, but it will be okay. Its Christmas, and Im going to go make deviled eggs. Wish me luck. I mean, how does anybody mess up deviled eggs, right? Merry Christmas, Ioway! Have a great day.
