MORNING FRESH WITH JODY BRESCH, Friday, October 31, 2014: Teonia Marsh and I are taking the kids trick-or-treating with Ashleigh Bresch this evening, and for all of you Halloween lovers who appreciate the harrowing and daring, this is not for the faint of heart. Ashleigh is like the Captain of a S.Q.U.A.T. team about Halloween trick-or-treating. Hunter and I first realized this when he was still a little tyke in his fuzzy purple dinosaur costume, maybe 3 or 4 years old. Ashleigh likes agendas, lists, plans, whatever you want to call them. I call them her master plan of attack, and she always has one. A weekend or two before Halloween she cases the town for what she considers to be the best decorated houses, and the most promising prospects for well lighted streets with lots of treats. She knows where all the trunks-for-treats are scheduled to be at, and where the hay rack ride is at. A stop at her place of work is always on the schedule too. She knows they are expecting her. She threatens with dire warnings, Youd better be able to keep up, and youd better not be late. We never are, and some times this in and of itself can be quite challenging. This year shes commandeering a crowd. There is Amary, Logan, Hunter, Nia, and Orion, and then we have her seconds-in-command, Luke, Teonia and me. Its going to take two vehicles, and one of them a mini-van, to get this show on the road. We do all of this at the speed of light, and in the blustery, windy dark of an October night, when the trees look like demonic skeletons, and the jack-o-lanterns glow like eerie eyes in the night. When the wind howls down the streets, blowing autumn leaves into swirling Tazmanian devils that twist and turn through the rows of little ghouls in hooded rayon robes wearing streaky cosmetic blood. When, if were lucky the moon intermittently glimmers through hazy clouds that drift in clusters across its haunting night light. If all goes according to plan, and thanks to Ashleighs General Patton attention to details, it usually does, we accomplish all of this in a frolicking two-and-a-half hours, and then we gather somewhere afterwards to retell our harrowing Halloween stories while the kids raid their bags of goodies for the best stuff until an exasperated parent calls a halt, telling them, Enough is enough. I have a lot to do before we meet at fifteen hundred hours, or shortly after at the first designated destination. So have a safe and Happy Halloween everybody. Brrrr...it feels, this morning, like the frost is most definitely on the pumpkin. Dress warm all you little goblins and hooligans.
